There is the old adage that someone dies and then a baby is born (i.e. In the Ghetto, E. Presley). Death replenishes life or vice versa or something like that.
Last week my local fraternity chapter sent out a News Letter. It seems like a millennium or since the millennium or before that one was sent out to all the members and alums. On the back page was listed three names under the words Chapter Eternal. A national designation that we have lost 3 of our members. All three were great guys. Their families, our brothers, and their friends will miss them. I will miss them. Each had a unique personality and a good countenance. Truly good people and good E Phi Delts.
As a result of the news letter hitting the desks of some brothers, the reality check that 3 of our finest have passed into the everlasting has possibly awakened some of our brothers.
I received one email and two phone calls from brothers talking about our losses. You could definitely hear it in their voices and read it in their writings that those words Chapter Eternal and the three names was maybe just a little too close to home. Some serious reflection (often very good for one's soul) took place and prompted the contact.
You know that there was much thought about the good ole times. Our Chapter knew how to have a good time, do it with class, and was full of a group of genuinely great guys that cared about each other. But, we were invincible, back then. Not so much any more. Some of the boys are gone.
So we all take a Mortality Check.....how are we physically, mentally, etc. It is time to seek reassurance from our Brothers, reach out to them and find out that it is all OK (at least for now). It is good to want to feel that spirit within us that was kindled by our fraternity experiences years ago. All too often we have run out to experience "Life" after college and found ourselves miles away from the ordinary (thanks Corona).
Death forces us to reflect, reach out, reconnect, relive, and revive ourselves in the company of our Brothers. Whether it be minutes, hours, or days that we spend with them......don't wait....don't let time take you away, away to the Chapter Eternal.
